Is Root Canal Treatment Painful? What to Actually Expect

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but that reputation is mostly outdated. Modern root canal treatment, done properly, is usually no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Why the fear exists The pain people associate with root canals actually comes from the problem the treatment fixes, not the treatment itself. An infected or badly decayed tooth causes intense pain before treatment. Root canal treatment removes that infection and relieves the pain, it does not cause it. What happens during the procedure The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, the same as for a filling. Once numb, the dentist removes the infected pulp from inside the tooth, cleans the canal, and seals it. Most patients feel pressure and vibration but not sharp pain. The procedure typically takes one to two visits depending on the tooth and how severe the infection is. What about after the procedure? Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal, similar to how a tooth feels after a deep filling. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough. Severe pain after the procedure is not typical and should be reported to your dentist. Signs you might need a root canal Persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling or tenderness in the gums, and a tooth that has darkened are all signs worth getting checked. The earlier it is treated, the simpler and more comfortable the procedure tends to be. When to see a dentist Do not wait for the pain to become unbearable. An infected tooth can affect the surrounding bone and, in rare cases, spread infection further. If you are experiencing tooth pain, message us on WhatsApp and we will get you in for an examination.
